Design thinking is useful for improving processes as well as products and can be a springboard for organizational change. As a staff, try using this approach to improve a school routine that’s not working as well as it might.

For example, one school had a tradition of holding regular community meetings for students and staff. Over time, student attendance had dropped. Faculty used the design process to investigate the needs of users (such as students). Interviews with students revealed that they didn’t like the morning meetings, because they were assigned to sit with their homerooms rather than their friends. Moreover, meetings happened mid-morning, a time when many students said they were hungry, and the agenda was driven by adults and held little interest for students. By engaging students on solutions, the school was able to introduce small changes, like allowing students to choose where to sit, offering snacks at the door, and having students plan and deliver programs. Attendance shot up and the experience became more valuable, for adults and students alike.

What routine needs improving at your school? How might you use design thinking to improve it?
